When I do seminars, one of the most common questions or requests I get is to tell someone a “new” method I’m using, and how I came up with it. They want to learn how to make the big bucks fast. Every time, I give the same answer: I never use any “new” methods per se, because the time tested ones are making me way more money than any of the hyped crap out there.
Think about it. Do you think it’s a “new” thing to be interactive with your customers? To build an email list and send them regular offers, to have them follow you on Twitter or Facebook? Back in the 90’s, before Internet was available to the public, I remember one of the local neighborhood bars doing extremely well. Why? Because you got 2 free drinks if you gave them your address. Then they would send you weekly updates of events and offers via direct mail. Do you see a link to modern email marketing here? They had other local business owners doing presentations in their rooms… Kind of like a myspace or facebook, where people “follow” or hook up with a person through a central location, only it was offline.
The only thing that has really changed is the platform for doing business. Of course, let’s not get into advertising, because there you have a market that has gone through a complete and total change, where the customers are now searching for what they want, instead of the businesses telling them. But as far as marketing in the field of reaching and cultivating your clients/customers, old school methods still work the best.
I suggest next time you get ads in your snail mail box or email inbox, that you stop for a while and take a look at how it’s done. A successful marketer studies his/her environment, and his/her competitors. Got mail from AAA, Boys and Girls Club, Time Magazine or something else? These are corporations that (hopefully) know what they’re doing. Do the same. Do what the successful ones are doing, not what all the noobs at some forum are throwing themselves over.
I can’t say how many times I’ve had people contact me and thank me, because I got them out of a narrow mindset, where looking for the latest PPC, SEO, CPA, Black hat, White hat, Gray Hat Trick became such an obsession that they had spent more time looking for a new method instead of implementing simple, tested strategies that would have boosted their income.
If you want to succeed in ANY field of your life, you have to educate yourself. I know I rant about it in every post, but get yourself some best seller marketing and personal development books, implement the strategies, and I can guarantee that you will see changes.
