Do you know DMA way to Big Data?

Next week is the Direct Marketing Association’s annual gathering in Las Vegas, and Daily Conversions will be onsite to provide event updates and insight.  The theme for the show is “Big Data.  Customer Engagement. Marketing Accountability.”  Since good and bad things are rumored to come in threes, we’ll see how well they pull it off.

Every where I turn these days is a discussion of Big Data – the terabytes of knowledge about you and me as consumers that can be mined for targeting and conversion.  Setting aside the immense questions of privacy, Big Data is at work.  And it is having a massive impact on the affiliate business.

Our industry originally served as outposts to attract pioneers looking to complete a transaction.  We were the equivalent of the general store or Sears catalog, bringing consumer and offer together. Now increasingly we are being asked to be the nosey neighbor, peering over the fence and report on likes, dislikes and habits of our readers and consumers.  All while we continue to craft our role in the new world order where increasingly the consumers can be found through data sets as much as clicks.

I’m really looking forward to the show next week, seeking to understand as well as be understood by fellow marketeers.  I want to know and help shape what affiliate marketing looks like in 3 years.
