Google Cans GAN because of Advertiser Choice?

On April 16th, Google announced that it is canning its Google Affiliate Network effective July 31st. Why? And what does it mean for your affiliate traffic and income? As with most press releases, there is little hard information on why Google made the decision, however there are a couple of things that can be gleaned: 1) Adsense Continues – Google will continue Adsense, its extremely successful matchmaker service between sites and advertisers. However, with Adsense there is little … [Read more...]

Shopify – Highest Commissions Of Any Affiliate Program?

At up to $353 per sale, Shopify has debatably one of the highest paying affiliate programs around. "When you sign up to be a Shopify affiliate, we’ll give you a special link to Shopify that you can share through a tweet, Facebook post, on your blog, through an ad – however you choose! You’ll earn revenue for every customer who signs up for Shopify through your link." What is it? Instead of me telling you how amazing Shopify is, just check out these examples. My … [Read more...]

AdTech San Francisco 2013

I just got back from AdTech San Francisco 2013. It shaped up to be a really great show. I got a lot of business done, made new contacts and had a great time. This show was different than most, I went with several orders of business and actually accomplished almost all of them. The difference? I didn't get stuck going to all the "networking events" aka waste of time parties with extremely loud music. (However, I will say that I heard Clickbooth and Engage BDR events were good and would have … [Read more...]

THE 15 GUIDELINES (#6): DON’T SPEAK WITHOUT SOMETHING TO SAY.

Quality or quantity? Without a doubt it’s quality. When you earn your living with words, write when you have something to say rather than column inches to fill. Nothing turns readers off faster than hollow blog posts. Or direct mail pieces without an offer. You can stuff the copy full of buzzwords like free, new, improved, etc., but without a substantial offer or significant point to make, it’s just noise. The New York Times sets the standard – “All the news that’s fit to print”, … [Read more...]

THE 15 GUIDELINES (#2): TALK TO ME LIKE AN EQUAL

Do you want to do business with idiots? You know, the ones on TV who scream that they are such bad business people that they ordered too many cars, forgot to pay their rent or just have too much stuff, so they are willing to let you get the deal of the century. “Please come do business with me” the ads scream, “because I need you to save me from my stupidity.” Really? It’s the lifetime value of a customer that is important to a successful business, so build a lifetime customer … [Read more...]

THE 15 GUIDELINES: TRUST IS THE FOUNDATION

Do I trust you? Do you trust me? If either of these questions generates a pause or worse an answer of no, our businesses are in real trouble. Think about it – when was the last time you did business with someone you didn’t trust? Apple Stores trump Best Buy in consumer reviews because people trust the Geniuses behind the Bar. Starbucks can demand more for a cup of coffee than many corner coffee shops because people trust the beans and brewing process. Boeing 787’s biggest problem is not … [Read more...]

THE POST PC ERA

Are you a PC-osarurus? The question lead off the USA Today’s business section, citing data that mobile device shipments have dwarfed traditional PCs. Even ignoring the smartphone, Canalys reports 2012 tablet shipments worldwide of 113.5M units, compared to only 36.6M PCs. And to channel that old favorite of the Who Goin’ Mobile, about 80% of the PCs that shipped were laptops. So what does it mean to you? Well, assuming you are not a part of the private equity takeout of Dell, really … [Read more...]

The Coming US EU Consumer Privacy War

Want to be in the middle of the worst trade war with the EU in modern times? You just might be whether you want to or not. The Obama Administration and the EU are in discussions to update their respective Consumer Privacy Guidelines, and while there is great alignment at the top level, there are significant disagreements on the details. In 2010 the Obama Administration published a “consumer privacy data framework” that address six basic consumer rights – individual control, transparency, … [Read more...]

The Future of Media with EngageBDR

What has 250 Million Unique Vistiors 2,500 Direct Publishers, Inventory Across 20 Countries, Propriety Technology and Billions of Monthly Impressions? Engage BDR. I found out not too far back that Engage BDR is right in my backyard in West Hollywood, CA. Led by the infamous Ted Dhanik, a former MySpace guy, the company is doing better than ever. My favorite part of Engage is their self serve and managed advertising platforms. Advertisers can check out their media buying end here. And … [Read more...]
