Becoming a successful affiliate marketer requires a special set of skills. The affiliate game can sometimes be demoralising and confusing, so it takes a lot to push through the bad times and reap the benefits of the good times. Being an affiliate marketer definitely isn’t for everyone.
If you think you’re up to the challenge then you’ll need these 7 skills to see you through.
- Problem Solving Skills
Problem solving plays a huge part in affiliate marketing. So you experienced a huge surge in clicks but your conversions dropped through the floor? What happened? What caused the surge in traffic and why is nobody clicking through? Maybe a notorious blogger linked to your site but the traffic wasn’t targeted enough which meant that nobody was really interested in your offer. In order to be successful in the long term you need to be able to figure out what the problem is and then be able to correct it. Time to get out the tweed hat and smoking pipe – ‘this could take a while, Watson’.
- Decision Making Ability
The ability to make a decision and stick to it is another incredibly important skill. You can’t play the waiting game whilst you’re hemorrhaging money on Facebook Ads. You have to act fast, decide how to get more visitors to click through and the sooner the better. The truth is, when your income depends on you making a quick decision, making any decision is better than doing nothing. Furthermore, don’t be too hard on yourself if its turns out you made the wrong decision. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
- Creative Mindset
New ideas, new ideas and new ideas. Creativity and innovation is imperative to staying one step above the rest. Constantly improving and innovating your adverts, landing pages and copywriting will make the difference between you following the trend and you being the trend that everyone follows. The real money falls with the latter.
- Marketing Knowledge
Well, this is affiliate marketing right? An in-depth marketing knowledge is critical to making your way in the affiliate world. Take the time to read books, read blogs and educate yourself and familiarise yourself with how things work and most importantly, why they work.
- Taking Action
It’s all well and good to educate yourself but one of the best ways to learn is in the field. Taking action on what you’ve learned is one of the best ways to cement those ideas into your mind. It’s a skill to know when you’ve read enough relevant information and when it’s time to start taking action and get your ass moving. Don’t waste time by reading and learning about things that aren’t relevant to the action you need to take in the immediate future. Make it a habit to read something relevant, take action on that information and then go back for more. Sometimes it’s even necessary to put yourself on an ‘information diet’ and allow yourself to focus on what you need to get done.
- Money Management
Cash flow is the lifeblood of being a successful affiliate marketer – it’s what powers your advertising campaigns and keeps people seeing your offers. You need to know when to spend and when to NOT spend. You need to be able to keep a close eye on your incomings and outgoings and make sure that you are living within your means. Don’t stretch yourself too far – affiliate marketing revenue can be a fickle beast and you certainly don’t want to get bitten.
- Self Discipline
Self discipline is important for almost everything. If you can’t discipline yourself to be more productive, to focus on the important things and to stay the course when things aren’t looking up then you should consider something else. It’s unbelievable how many people fail in the face of distractions and ‘shiny object syndrome’. Pick one tactic and stick at it. Don’t let your focus be averted by internet marketing gurus that promise glorious riches – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to your guns and follow through on your goals. Having the discipline to put in the time and effort is the key to success.
